BND Audience Responses - “Conveys emotions beyond the edge”
“The piece brought out the human in the superhero and made me feel sorry for him”
“Loved it!” “Awesome!” “Bravo.”
“I see the ebb and flow of all relationships in this piece.”
“I was most moved by the vibrancy of the movement, facial expression and eye contact (between dancers).”
“Large full and open movement- joyful, alive and free.”
“The joy of music in the Peruvian culture was so well expressed – face to toes!”
“I liked the use of hands and arms- open, closed, tangled, searching; to signify strain or ease, confusion, neediness, etc.”
"I could have written a whole book on the Batman dance!"
BRAVE
NEW DANCES is a glimpse of the first drafts of dance theatre works
created by members of Maude Baum and Company Dance Theatre and invited
guest artists. These are innovative and experimental works in progress,
rather than polished repertory pieces.
BRAVE NEW DANCES (BND) is a forum for choreographers to take creative
chances, challenge themselves, stretch the boundaries of their craft
and to push the limits of the artform. Discerning questions are posed
by each choreographer. Audience members are asked to answer these
questions and include other comments and questions raised by the piece
in a written format after each work is shown.
New works are presently being choreographed by Company members Maude
Baum, Mary Beth Hampshire, Lynn Hasselbarth, Deb Rutlegde and Richard Chaffin.
Lynn Hasselbarth spent last year in Peru. She learned several
indigenous dances from villagers in the small town she lived in.
Lynn has incorporated these dancers with modern dance movement to
create an uplifting and beautiful blend of traditional and new
dance. She will use traditional costumes of embroidered wool,
made by Peruvian women, and Peruvian Music for her piece.
Richard Chaffin is creating a work about the infamous Batman.
Complete with the “Batman Signal”, motor scooter driving Batman and
gargoyles. The piece is about life forces that tug one in too
many directions.
Audience comments from BND 2008:
"Lots of emotion - made me cry and laugh.
Filled with reality and satire."
"This piece was better than any I saw at Jacobs Pillow this
Summer."
The performance concludes
with an informal reception where audience members and choreographers
mingle and discuss the work!
Tickets: $14 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, $8 eba Dance & Fitness students.
